6/10  3rd Annual Route 66 Blue Carpet Corridor festival day   (Saturday:  8:00 am - 5:00 pm)
The Illinois Route 66 Blue Carpet Corridor will be celebrating its third annual festival event on Saturday, June 10. From Virden down to Collinsville on several historic alignments of Route 66, twelve communities will be offering car shows, festivals, museum and attraction open hours, children's activities, food, photo ops, and fun.

Souvenir Blue Carpet Corridor 2017 passports will be available for free in all the participating communities, and visitors can get a unique stamp in each town. The complete list of passport stops is available at www.bluecarpetcorridor.org. Passport Stop open hours will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and many events and attractions will also follow that schedule. Also available on the website is a downloadable Schedule of Passport Stops and Activities.

Communities participating this year are: Virden, Girard, Carlinville, Gillespie, Staunton, Hamel, Edwardsville, Litchfield, Mt. Olive, Glen Carbon, Troy, and Collinsville.

6/16  Jungle Book - Maryville Movie in the Park   (Friday:  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm)
Maryville Park and Rec Committee will begin their 2017 Movies in the Park series with the Jungle Book (2016-PG) on Friday, June 16 at Drost Park in Maryville, starting after dusk about 8:40-8:45. The Disney movie is a live action/animated story of a young boy trying to find his way through the jungle and his encounters with a lazy bear, devious snake and orangutan.

The movie and Bobbys Frozen Custard are provided by Bobbys Frozen Custard, Cindys Critter Camp, Maryville Mayor Craig Short, Collinsville Township, and Redmon Insurance. Continuing this year, a number of local vendors will set up their tables and offer treats and prizes to those in attendance beginning at 7:30.
Follow the green and blue signs off of Rt. 159 to Valadabene Drive to Schiber Court. Bring your lawn chairs, loungers, blankets, & bug spray to make your evening comfortable. If you have questions, call Maryville Parks & Rec 618-772-8555 between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

6/17  Maryville Fishing Derby   (Saturday:  9:00 am - 12:00 pm)
Maryville Parks & Rec, Bass Masters of Granite City and Midwest Members Credit Union will host the 17th Annual Maryville Fishing Derby Saturday, June 17 at Drost Park at Pavilion #1 at Drost Park off Schiber Court and Vadalabene. Registration begins at 9:00 with the Derby starting promptly at10:00 and ending at 11:00 AM. Refreshments will be provided by Midwest Members Credit Union.

Any youngster 15 years or under may participate in this free, is a catch and release event. Since they are under the age of 16, they do not need a fishing license. Awards will be given for largest and most fish caught in various age divisions, as well as numerous attendance prizes given out.

On Sunday, June 18th, Edisons will offer a Dads Play Free special in honor of Fathers Day. All day long, dads may receive a complimentary pass valid for 3 hours of bowling, laser tag, and arcade play. 6/20  TNR Information Session   (Tuesday:  4:00 pm - 7:00 pm)
TNR Information Session - Metro East Humane Society (MEHS) is starting a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program in Alton in an effort to reduce the stray and feral cat population. Cats will be trapped, taken to MEHS for spay/neuter surgery and returned to the area the following day. Cats will be ear-tipped and tattooed to identify them as community cats. In addition, MEHS is working to educate Alton residents about ways to coexist with community cats including tips for handling nuisance issues. To learn more about the TNR or how to volunteer for the program, MEHS is hosting an information night at Old Bakery Beer Company on June 20th 4-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Old Bakery Beer Company is located at 400 Landmarks Boulevard in Alton.
6/22  Master Gardeners Open Gate Open House   (Thursday:  6:00 pm - 8:00 pm)
On Thursday evening, June 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners will host an Open House at the Open Gate Demonstration Garden in Drost Park located in Maryville. A number of Master Gardeners will be stationed around the gardens to answer questions about their plantings and also about your specific garden inquiries.

The main purpose of the Garden is to demonstrate to the public various common and uncommon plants and gardening techniques. This includes raised beds, tree planting, pruning, deadheading, companion plantings, weed control, composting and staking techniques. There are a multitude of themed beds as well such as a Butterfly Garden, Japanese Garden, Perennial Plant of the Year Bed, Herb Garden, Grass Garden, Meditation Garden, and Vegetable Garden to name a few.

The Master Gardeners will also be selling over 150 varieties of daylilies that evening. The event is free and the garden is beautiful.

To get to the Open Gate Demonstration Garden from Hwy. 159 take Vadalabene Drive to Schiber Court, then turn into the park on Myron Provence Parkway. You can also Google #8 Schiber Court or Drost Park.
